Evergreen
Music and lyrics by Matthew Scharpf

Left far from his family tree
A lone seed on a cold winter breeze
From the hills of West Virginia
He was blown to the plains of the prairie

Soon found himself some fertile ground
Irish in name and then degree
But South Bend wasn’t quite the town
To plant the roots of what became this giving tree

We’re as young as our faith, old as our doubts
And live somewhere in between

As bittersweet as these days may seem
In our hearts you remain evergreen

Doc Emmanuel guided your plans
And your five kids began to grow
The orphan became a wealthy businessman
And the Rush Street Romeo

The Sox, the homes, the red sportscars
Never mattered as much to the man
As flying the girls down to Mexico
Like a modern day Peter Pan

We’re as young as our hopes, old as our fears
And live somewhere in between

As bittersweet these days may seem
In our hearts you remain evergreen

The summer fades and the leaves begin to fall
But you remain green and true
You gave so much and loved us all
Now it has all come back to you

We’re as young as our dreams, old as our despair
And then there are days like these

As bittersweet these moments can seem
In our hearts you remain evergreen

Oh the cheap white wine, all the good times
And those yet to be seen

Please remember as the leaves fall down
You will remain evergreen.
